From Writing on Medium Full-time to Working at Meta

My journey to filling the creative writing gap in AI development, and how you can do it too.

A lot can change in 3 years.

Hi! I’m Gillian.

For some of you, I am a nostalgic face you remember from many moons ago.

For others, you’ve never read my work before, and this is our first time meeting.

Whatever the case may be, welcome!

A lot has changed for me in the last few years. I transitioned from writing full-time on Medium to doing the same on NewsBreak, and even spent a year travelling through Europe and Asia.

But the biggest change that’s taken place is the dramatic shift in my career focus— from writing on Medium to contracting with the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Yup, that happened!

Just 3 years ago, I was making a full-time income writing personal essays and social commentaries on Medium. Today, I am finishing off my first month at Meta on one of their GenAI teams.

Now, like many creative writers, you may be thinking that there’s no place for us in the AI world.
