Since our first meetup a lot has changed in the world and that has meant we’ve migrated to a totally digital way of working. We’ve been having weekly catch ups on Wednesday where we workshop some smaller part of a project or do something a bit different. The calendar can be found here.

However this last Thursday was our latest full workshop and once again we had 15 attendees ready and raring to take on the Climate Crisis. This challenge had been selected by the community from a selection of the top problems on the project drawdown list.

The session started with some minor technical difficulties, we had to switch from Google hangout to Zoom because of some limts on the number of attendees, we also had some trouble getting everyone into deskle but in the end we made it.

The flow of he workshop is changed slightly too with a lot less talking between parties and a lot more whole group interaction, enbabled by the digital whiteboard tool we use.

Very quickly lots of good challenges were identified through the ‘How Might We’ excercise:
How might we position rainforests as insurance policies?
How might we create accessible edication around reforestation?
How might we envourage people to eat less meat to reduce deforestation?

The one that was most highly voted to frame our session however was:

How might we conver jobs connected to deforestation into jobs in protection?

This led to an explosion of ideas and solutions and was a really interesting challenge to grapple with.

We had 3 ideas which fell into the high impact and possibly low effort camp:

Skillshare:
A platform to workers to education and upskilling opportunities. The idea would see workers be able to search and find new areas of interest and would be able to sign up to a free program to get themselves retrained in this new skill, if they were then willing to teach that skill to others in their community for free.
The platform would seek partnerships with other organisations already doing work around the globe with foreste communities.

Profit & Protect:
A platform which connects locals living near topical forests to low cost loans so they can setup new forest oriented businesses. This product also includes support materials to enable those wishing to start businesses or change their businesses to be doing so in a sustainable fashion.

Breathe The Rainforest:
A travel agency which helps bring the super rich on eco awareness holidays n the tropical rainsofrests of the world. These expensive holidays pay for locals to provide tours and content raising awareness of rainforests and helping protect the forest. All flight will have carbon offsetting applied as will every part of the trip and all products used whilst on the trip will be from communities in the forest.

We’ll be taking these ideas into the next workshop to test them and see if there’s a team who wants to take any of them forward.

We hope to see you next time! Please sign up to hear about the next event: Sign up!

As always we’d love for you to join us so either attend a workshop or sign up to be given access to the Slack channel to start getting invovled.
