What started out as a simple conversation about how medical students and junior doctors could get more exposure and experience in healthcare technology, innovation and entrepreneurship has snowballed into something that looks like medical education reform.

Integrated innovation training takes a long-term view that in order for the NHS innovation ecosystem to remain sustainable and close the gap between invention and innovation in practice, we need a new cohort of clinicians who have the unique skills and experience to innovate.

Nevertheless, a roadmap explaining what skills I need to learn to call myself an innovator, and the avaialble routes to obtain experiential learning remain obstacles.

This publication will document our journey, where my collaborators and I hope to build a career path that offers the scope, geographic distribution and seamless integration of innovation with traditional UK clinical training.

In doing so, we hope to inspire relevant stakeholders and future learners to consider how we can prepare the healthcare workforce for the complex challenges presented to us in 21st century healthcare.
