CFWIJ Founder and Advocacy Directors to speak at the ‘Women Journalists Safety Panel’ in collaboration with TGS

TURKEY, Istanbul, December 5, 2019 — — The Coalition For Women In Journalism’s Founding Director Kiran Nazish and Advocacy Director Sulome Anderson will be speaking at the ‘Women Journalists’ Safety Panel’, to be held in collaboration with Turkey Journalism Syndicate (TGS) on December 16, in Istanbul.

The CFWIJ delegation will be speaking about safety issues for women journalists in Turkey. As the founder of The Coalition, Kiran speak about the need for The Coalition, particularly in Turkey, which is one of the most dangerous countries for women journalists. This year, Turkey remained one of the largest jailers of women journalists. Sulome will be joining the discussion to add her diverse experiences as a woman journalist in the field into the mix.

The duo will discuss different studies that The Coalition has released during the year, including its Turkey and MENA imprisonment report.

TGS representatives Şafak Timur and Gülfem Karataş, who are members of Women and LGBTI+ Commission, will share studies conducted by TGS. The two are expected to put the local dynamics of working as a woman journalist in Turkey into perspective.

The panel will be different from the usual conversations around women journalists, and will be followed by a roundtable that will focus on the practical stops that can be taken for a better, safer environment for women journalists.
