FIFDH Geneva 2019

Kiran Nazish talks cyberbullying, women journalists and more at #FIFDH19 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Coalition For Women In Journalim’s Founding Director Kiran Nazish was part of a discussion forum titled ‘Women Journalists: Prime Targets of Cyberbullying?’ at the 2019 International Film Festival And Forum On Human Rights.

Women journalists have to face the onslaught of gender-based violence and attacks because of their professional work. The session featured an enlightening discussion on how the issue presents itself in current times.

The culprits range from jilted readers to organized groups acting for governments. Sexist and racist slurs, threats involving rape and murder, and violence are used to silence and dehumanize women journalists.

“Attacks can get really intense in some countries, like Pakistan, India or Mexico. Obviously, all these attacks that take place against women journalists are a reflection of the cultural sentiment,” Nazish said during the discussion.

The debate also included the voices of Nadia Daam from the 28-minute show and Arzu Geybulla — a freelance journalist. The session was moderated by Célia Héron, head of the column Society at the newspaper Le Temps.

The session was also co-presented by Agenda 21 Service — Sustainable City of Geneva, the European Union, the OSCE and the Equality Service of University of Geneva.
