Another busy year has come to an end, and we think it’s time to reflect on all the things we achieved in 2016. It was been a really good year for us at codebar. We grew our organisations with three new chapters (two of these outside the UK), ran over a 150 workshops, went to lots of conferences and rebranded. So here are the numbers…

1 new visual identity. At the beginning of 2016 we knew it was time for codebar to get a facelift. With a digital first approach, we worked with the talented Sam Canvin to ensure the new brand reflected the vibrant, colourful, open, and welcoming community we have built around codebar.

2nd uncodebar, aka uncodebar 2: bigger, better, more absorbent. This year saw us running the second edition of our popular unconference, uncodebar. With talks of all kinds and a surprise game of Bingo it sure was bigger, better and more absorbent.

3 new chapters. We have started three new chapters this year. Oxford in the UK and Barcelona and Berlin in Europe. Opening the Berlin chapter was an especially big milestone for us as it was, at the time, our first international chapter. So a huge thank you to everyone for helping kick these chapters off.

7 conferences. 2016 saw codebar attendees get the opportunity to attend a selection of some of the best conferences in and outside the UK. Including: /dev/winter 2016, BathRuby 2016, ScotlandJS 2016, /dev/summer 2016, EMF Camp 2016, HybridConf 2016, and operability.io 2016.

8fabulous stories on codebar stories. In 2016 we started a new blog highlighting codebar community members journeys into tech. With many more in the pipeline we hope you have liked reading these stories as much as we have.

9 codebar Monthlies. This year we started a new speaker series event aimed at people starting their journey into tech. Our goal was to create a safe space where new developers could explore topics relevant to their experience level, possibly even do their first talk in a supportive and friendly environment. We are happy to say codebar Monthlies have been a huge success!

10 one day events/workshops. These include our very first hackathon with Monzo, a Conference Talk Proposal workshop with ScotlandJS, an Intro to DevOps workshop, two How to Land Your First Developer Role workshops in London and Brighton, our annual 24 Pull Requests event with Ladies of Code and an Intro to Android Development workshop.

28 organisers. Across all of our chapters we now have 28 organisers, all of them volunteers, who ensure codebar workshops run smoothly and regularly. A huge thank you to every person who devoted their time to codebar this year.

159 workshops. In 2016 we ran 159 workshop across all of our active chapters. This translates to around 397.5 hours of learning and networking. Not counting the regular after workshop trips to the pub 🍻.

Tuesday, October 25 was one busy day for us

791 members in our Slack team. We chatted about all kinds of things in our online forum this year, from recruitment to conference swag to tips on how to run an open space type event. Members also shared a lot of great events and learning resources, and a few shared their successes with the wider community. We love chatting with you all on our Slack, for a chance to be part of the conversation join here.

The best type of Slack message

3000 followers on Twitter. By the end of the year we had 3000 followers on our main codebar Twitter account, @codebar and countless more on our chapter specific accounts.
