As Dylan Understood

Folk songs make light of death

as Dylan understood

and once you have a death in hand

you needn’t give a damn

for anyone who doesn’t understand

or for that matter anyone who does

If anybody wishes she could be my fan now

be advised my show closed long ago

well before you cursed your mother

for not breastfeeding you

Mine didn’t either too icky for her

Anyway once death is understood

it makes no difference

you will have compensatory breasts

forever if you play things right

The trick folk music gives you

is to see a glimpse of the reality

behind the crap we miscreate

and that’s worth something eh what

I am no fan of anyone and never was

and never will be having been exposed

when young to enough of that to

enable me to namedrop till the

lowing heifer gives the ghost her due

Oh I have pride I do more than you’ll ever know

The only one who really knew it died some years ago

Perceptions die you know

like talents yea like life itself

That’s what folk music knows

And you thought it was just

pre-rock and roll

You never tossed

a ball against a wall

or called your daddy dear

Hey lighten up a bit

And put some Harry Smith on before

the time comes for your solemn mass
