Courage Is The First Virtue

Life is tumultuous.
Begin with that proposition.
Wittgenstein would be proud.
Within life’s chaos is contained
love, hate, joy, rage,
exhilaration and despair,
compathy and loneliness.
We bounce from extreme to extreme,
sometimes feeling battered,
sometimes feeling sublime,
sometimes feeling nothing at all.
You cannot be a self aware person
without paying the price.
Up and down, around and around,
we desperately chase our tails.
Just to wake up in the morning
and take that first breath
is to make a separate peace
with the universe, an armistice
with reality enabling our existence.
Nothing becomes less tumultuous,
but life does struggle on.
We continue to dream and to hope,
against experience, against all odds,
to try to live with courage
and exhibit grace under pressure,
all there really is to give.
