Donald Trump’s Act Is No Longer Funny or Acceptable

Not only are Donald Trump’s statements and behavior beneath the dignity of the office he seeks, they are dangerous, reckless and unforgivable. His “joke” about 2nd amendment people being able to stop judges was reprehensible enough in isolation. Coupled with his comments today about the President of the United States and the former Secretary of State being the co-founders of ISIS, it all becomes absolutely frightening.

I understand it is quite easy to find humor in the absurdity of his statements, and that we can easily fact check away his ISIS claim, but thinking beyond the absurdity for a second…this is the Republican nominee for President saying time and time again (and declining numerous opportunities to retract) that the President of The United States and Hillary Clinton are the founders of a heinous group of terrorists who savagely murder, rape, kidnap and torture innocent people. That is a disgusting claim.

In addition to it being utterly indefensible in terms of honesty, the ISIS claim is also utterly indefensible in terms of morality and decency. It is a vile and hateful charge that should be repudiated by every single citizen of the United States.

The combination of casually joking about “2nd amendment people” changing the outcomes of nominations and then calling his political opponent and the President of the United States the head of a terrorist organization is offensive beyond description — and incredibly dangerous. There is an element of our society who, either through personal hatred and animosity or through mental illness, is unable to distinguish fact from fiction and delusion. For that element to hear a national leader deliver that message such as Donald Trump did today is putting a lit match way too close to a powder keg.

70 Republican officials today signed a letter calling on the Republican National Committee to withdraw its support of Donald Trump just days after 50 Republican national security experts denounced Trump, saying he would put our nation at risk. While that is an excellent start, it is woefully inadequate. Continuing to support Donald Trump is increasingly becoming morally indefensible if it hasn’t crossed that line already.

The idea that a political party would continue to expend time and effort to make this dangerous man the President of The United States is well beyond my comprehension and clearly betrays the party’s commitment to putting country first.
