Everything Is Connected

Recently I’ve come to the realization how everything is connected; how you feel about your job has an impact on your diet, which then affects your weight, which does something to your self-esteem, thus modifying the mental narrative in your mind that adjusts your emotional well being, shifting your behavior…

You get the point.

One day I woke up looking forward to the day and the next thing you know I’m making a green smoothie, and getting prepared for the day.

That day was an outlier, of course.

Self-awareness is a skill we need to cultivate in our society. The first thing to do in an attempt to fix your life if you’re frustrated with your life, stuck in a rut, is to become more self-aware. Notice what activities you engage in that bring fire to your being, then do it more.

It really is that simple, but you’ll hear people say, “I don’t have the time. It’s just a hobby. It won’t pay.”

a) You have the time, you just have to prioritize it and (b) It does pay — maybe not in terms of money but in terms of energy — by putting you in a better state of mind.

So even if you hate your job and you’re stuck in a rut, remember how Einstein said, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” Or as Garyvee likes to say, “What got you here won’t get you there.”

You see, the main problem I see with people is they’re too comfortable in their place. I used to be like that, “Everything’s semi-good — not great — so why change it?”

I got lucky because things got too uncomfortable. Suddenly, the pain of being stuck in a rut was greater than the effort of changing things, and that’s the driving force that made me change. My life was literally breaking down around me, the things I kept putting my effort into failed one at a time, and I literally felt sick in the stomach everyday for a long time.

But people might not get that lucky. Their comfort zone might not be painful enough — so they tolerate everything, and numb whatever pain that might appear using chemicals or my favorite — food.

So here’s the thing, if something in your life is not going right — maybe it’s your weight or your emotional being or your career — then stop and think of how everything is connected and make a positive change elsewhere.

If you’re feeling lonely, and are too shy about going to meetups, go running.

If you’re trying to lose weight, do something about your job.

It does sound counter-intuitive, but everything is connected.
