In the Basement of the Tower of Babel
We understood it, once
The old language
Spoken wordlessly together
Before the sins
And transgressions
It calls still
Our hearts hear
Minds perceive
In our bones it rings
Our souls aflame
Remnants only
Of an age gone by
Absent of impurities
United by a language
No one spoke
All understood
In the basement
Of the Tower of Babel
Our common humanity
Rests among the ruins
Monuments, tomes, civilizations
What we might have been
What we were
What we failed to be
In all endeavors
That forgot our language
That spoke of higher powers
Yet forgot the highest of all
And left humanity behind
In a magnificent tower
Crumbling around itself
Built in pursuit of the illusion
That we mattered least
And so we forgot our language
And locked ourselves away
In the basement
Of the Tower of Babel
