My new strategy for writing on Medium. What’s yours?

A few weeks ago, I was accepted by Ev Williams & the Medium Staff as part of the Medium Partner Program.

What does that mean? That I am now part of the writers who can get paid for sharing stories, according to how great and engaging they are.

To me, it was an honor, and I felt greatly humbled.

I have been recently thinking about what it would change for me, as a writer.

Being part of the Partner Program means that I can choose: whether my stories can be read by everyone on Medium (and then I am not being paid), or only by the paid Medium members (and then I am being paid).

I can lock (make it private) or unlock (make it public) my stories at any time.

The advantages to post publicly: higher reach, possibility to be published in popular publications, and therefore it’s easier to increase one’s audience.

First approach to use the Partner Program?

Being paid to write about things you love feels really great.

What feels even greater is to understand how the system works to play this game in the best way possible.

My first intention was to keep posting publicly in a famous publication, and once my article gets some traction, to remove it and make it private.

Then, I realized it was a bit disrespectful for the publication, and might not brings me the results I wanted anyway.

If a story gets traction publicly, nothing tells that it will have a higher reach once made private. Moreover, the publishing date would be anterior to the moment when it’s being locked to the members only.

I realized that it would make me lose a lot of momentum.

So I decided to change my approach.

New approach to use the Partner Program

Writing every single day has always been something that brought me an insane amount of results and benefits.

Because it helps me considerably to improve my writing.
Because it makes my audience growing way quicker than posting once a week.

So this is the first part: writing every single day.

Then, I think that Medium is currently experimenting a lot around the Partner Program. That’s why I decided to lock directly all of my stories that qualify to be part of the “Members Only” section of Medium.

Why? Two things:

  1. Medium works hard to improve this section and put a lot of effort into it: it makes it interesting to test it and understand how it really works, from a writer side.
  2. Compound effect: as long as the story remains locked, writers are being paid. I assume than the more I post now in this section, the more the views I get are going to compound over time and increase my monthly income.

What is your strategy?

When it comes to content writing and sharing ideas, I don’t believe in any rules but the ones I choose for myself.

However, I really think it’s important to have a specific strategy to apply if we want to see results in the long run.

Mine is to keep posting every single day, whatever happens, and to lock the stories qualifying with the Medium Partner Program, to start building a revenue step by step.

What’s yours?
