Saying Yes To No
Murmur of cherry blossoms…
Spring tries again.
We call it new life
but it’s the same, old life
returned for another futile
attempt at redemption.
Men still love to make war.
Women birth frightened children.
Refugees bloat on foreign beaches.
The rich eat the poor
and find them delicious.
Nothing ever changes, really,
but every year, we pretend.
Pretending is powerful.
Pretending says yes to no.
If we ever stop pretending,
the cherry blossoms will go silent,
spring will come no more, and
icy reality will rule the world.
So tell yourself a lie today.
Make it a lie of hope and warmth.
Pretend that lie is the truth.
Pretend with all your might.
Believe it like a lonely child
pretending a better world.
Listen again to the murmur
of cherry blossoms.
What do you want to hear?
