Texts From My Uber Driver

Wait, why does my Uber driver have my cell phone number?

No, no. I get it. They need to be able to connect with me in case they can’t find me. That makes sense. I need to be able to do the same and Uber makes this possible with a button in the app.

But why doesn’t Uber obfuscate our actual phone numbers?

Uber could easily do this by adding a two way communication feature to their app that only works while the driver is in route. Uber should do this. And they should do it with one of their annoying weekly app updates that doesn’t do anything other than “bug fixes.”

By providing the diver with my actual phone number it opens the door for serious harassment. Or worse. My drivers already find out where I live and work, the last thing I need is for them to be able to contact me once the ride is over.

Look, I love Uber and will continue to use their service. I just think they could do a little more to protect me, the customer.
