Consider these men. Consider what they stood for. Consider the vast sweep of US history. What would all these have us do?

What to Do After the Election

As a Democrat who has voted in every election since 1968, I have seen a lot of Presidents, and I have seen the consequences of their actions. I have some perspective on how the United States works through things, and how this nation endures.

For the first time in my life, I am afraid. Afraid for women, immigrants, and people of color. Afraid for the stability of this country and of the world. Afraid even for my family.

Now is the time to move forward, together, in the work of keeping our country United.

It is not the time to talk of moving to Canada.

It is not the time to talk of delivering payback fueled by hatred. Expecially when that payback tramples our laws and the values of our Founding Fathers.

Whoever you are, you are needed to defend the spirit of this great, ongoing experiment in government.

Always, consider the hopes and needs of those who are different from you.

Remember that this country has always thrived when the needs of all are considered, and it has always suffered when one group has insisted on fulfilling the will of the majority alone.

You are needed to engage in the active practice of democracy, which means, over everything else, safeguarding the life and liberty of everyone who lives within our borders.
