Declaration of War
The candidate needed a common enemy to unite the people, and the colony became it.
Light-years away, the only thing the colonists expected from Earth were the regular shipments without which it would be very hard for them to survive.
They did not expect news of someone campaigning against them.
Constitutions had been amended so that supply lines would prevail regardless of changes in government, but everybody knew that things could still change, provided that public opinion wanted as much.
The shipments cost a great deal of money and resources, and that became the focal point of the candidate’s campaign.
Even though they were ensuring the preservation of the human species, even though they were sacrificing the lives they used to have back on their home planet, the settlers were turned into an evil picture of parasites who lived in luxury while the rest of the population paid for their every expense.
The candidate won the election, but luckily the shipments continued.
When the news reached the colony, the candidate, light-years away, was already about to embark on the campaign for a second term.
These time, words and accusations would not suffice, and thus a declaration of war against an enemy who would receive it years down the line was signed.
Official communications ceased.
Shipments were cut.
Those already on the way were issued orders to return with their cargo untouched.
Even some bombs were sent.
Michael, who had been born in the colony, had volunteered to steer one of the ships back.
He wanted to see his parents’ planet and pay back their debt in doing so.
After a journey of several years, he was definitely not expecting to be deported.
