Some say Rene Magritte was more a ‘philosopher painter’ than a ‘painter philosopher’.

I agree with the former.

His paintings arouse curiosity, twist your perspectives and help you develop your own line of thinking. Magritte played a pivotal role on the surrealist playground, creating his unique identity.

“My paintings are visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question, ‘What does that mean?’. It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable.”

Let’s explore 5 nudes of the man with a bowler hat.

At first go, this is a somber and dark image where a man tries to grope a woman. The woman pushes him away. Her gesture is defensive; he seems anxious.

But, as usual, our disruptor-in-chief twists it and presents us in a mind-boggling manner.

The combination of the man’s silhouette on the woman, her shadow peeping out of the man’s back and the confusion of the two pairs of hands.
