Let this be a lesson to moms who throw out their children’s artwork

I found my sacred masterpiece in a profane place — my mother’s trash bin. She had been cleaning out the basement, and one of my paintings was peaking out of the trashcan.

She gave me a sheepish grin and explained, “I just don’t have space for it.”

Considering that most paintings hang on walls, not taking up space, I knew my mom was fibbing. But the painting was crap, so I didn’t blame her for tossing it. (I went through a “yellow period” in which all my paintings looked like someone had vomited bile on them.)

But I couldn’t resist a teasing question.

“What if someday I become famous? You are going to regret throwing out that painting.”

Unfortunately, like most artists, no one will feel any regret for chucking my art until I am thoroughly dead.

But that’s the conundrum of all art — its value fluctuates. So before you toss that painting from an unknown artist, you might want to remember the following artworks that suffered such a fate.
