Banksy, a Political Artist?

Who is Banksy? Where does he come from? What is his real name? Well, we don’t know. In fact, we know very little about this international star of the street art scene. And it is this anonymity that has, I think, contributed to the rise of the most famous stencil artist on the planet. So, we don’t know much about him, except maybe two pieces of information that we can almost affirm with certainty. He was born in 1974 in the city of Bristol, England and he is the son of a printer. We also know that he created his first works in the underground scene of Bristol in the late 1990s. He got his start as a graffiti artist in his hometown of Bristol, where he was part of the DrybreadZ Crew. He still remains loyal to his hometown and returns there quite regularly, as evidenced by some of the stencils that pop up on the city’s walls from time to time. Concerning his art, Banksy generally uses the stencil technique by putting in scene popular imagery or famous characters which he diverts to send a strong and striking message.

We also know that Banksy is a very committed artist. Sure, some of his works may be considered humorous, but Banksy is above all a deeply committed artist. With his art, we see that he’s fighting for freedom, for justice, fighting against famine, war, against…
