Despite graduating at top of her class at the Columbia Law School, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was never recognized in her early career. Often referred to as “the slight figure alone at the big table”, she became too powerful to ignore only when she got the biggest of the big job at the Supreme Court. She was the second-ever female Supreme Court Justice, after Sandra Day O’Connor. This is where she started becoming a larger-than-life pop-culture hero.

RBG embraced the ‘Notorious RBG’ meme and it instantly became a brand of a designated badass feminist with a feisty swag.

Court uniforms don’t leave a lot of room for personalization. Perhaps for this same reason, RBG and O’Connor jointly decided to use collars (also known as jabots) to not only give a feminine touch to the robe but also to send out a message. Amongst the sea of black suits and ties, she always stood out, albeit subtly; thanks to these collars.
