What did a Medieval city sound like?

I live in London and as such it’s fair to say there are rarely any moments of silence — so much so that I notice when I can’t hear anything. The din of traffic, the chatter of people and the endless building work and expansion of the city combine to create a space that seems to be alive — a kind of urban beast that tosses and turns as it sleeps.
