The movie Step Brothers, directed by Adam McKay, tells the story of two lazy, unemployed, 40-ish year old men who still live with their parents. Their worlds collide when Brennan (Will Ferrell) and Dale’s (John C. Reilly) parents get married. The two end up having to share a room which immediately causes them to dislike each other. After many (hilarious) arguments and inflicting some physical pain between each other, they notice their dislike for each other and their narcissism is causing their parents to argue and pull the family apart. The two step brothers are forced to move past their rivalry to reunite their parents and they actually become good friends in the end.

Step Brothers is the type of movie you would expect from Will Ferrell. The graphic humor can be compared to the Anchorman series. Ferrell mainly acts in comedy movies and is always able to make an audience laugh. Some of his other works include Get Hard, Elf,and Megamind. He has made kid friendly comedies/cartoons as well as more adult humor films, making him more well known/ liked for all audiences. Although his character in Step Brothers is well-executed, this is not the type of movie I would have expected John C. Reilly to be in. Reilly is typically in dramas such as Casualties of War and The Thin Red Line. However, he has voiced in animated kids movies like Wreck It Ralph and Sing. Like Ferrell, his wide range of movie genres has made him a well known/liked actor. Overall, casting these two as the main characters was a great idea since they are both have a lot of acting experience and are well known.

This movie is a movie I’m not surprised that is was directed by Adam McKay. This director has worked on many movies with Ferrell. Most of these movies were comedies: Anchorman 1 and 2, Get Hard, Tammy, and Daddy’s Home. Step Brothers is not the first film Ferrell and Reilly act together in; they also act in Talladega Nights:The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, which is also directed by McKay. Although McKay mainly directs comedies, he has directed a few thriller and action movies like Antman and The Other Guy. Like Ferrell and Reilly, he has directed in a wide range of genres, which makes him a more well known and likable director. Also, by having him direct with people he has worked with before, the movie is better performed since he knows the acting styles of the main characters.

Comedy has been a popular genre for many years, especially more young adult humor. If you find yourself enjoying the laughs given from watching Step Brothers, then you will be pleased to find out there is many more movies like this. Some more well known comedies are the Hangover, Pineapple Express, Bridesmaids , Ted, and 21 Jump Street. Many of these movies in this genre have a lot of the same actors in them. For example, Steve Carell stars in The 40 year Old Virgin and in Anchorman. Adam Sandler is also a big name in comedy; some of his biggest movies are Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, and the Water Boy. Another big actor is Ben Stiller who stars in Zoolander, Little Fockers, and Anchorman. Step Brothers is a fun movie that fits in well with the comedy genre and is actually entertaining and hilarious. Grade: A
