Nina Szarka

On the sidewalk he asks me
what I do for a living
and I stop walking and
look at the traffic
for answers
I cannot tell him what he wants to know
which is
how I pay the electric bill
because I want to be asked
what I love
I ask him
when was the last time he
shoveled handfuls of kumquats into his mouth
I ask him
if he can sing
He says "I am sure you have a job"
He says "Aren’t you cold out here wearing that"
He says "Do you live on whiskey"
I say, "I am in love with people."
I leave after the first drink.
