Burnout is not the end of the world!
There is nothing more stressful than finding out that your employee might be going through burnout!
While there are a lot of ways to prevent burnout inside a company, such as -
- Having an amazing work culture,
- Having great schedules to help employees have a better work-life balance,
- Having open communication channels and pathways,
- Fostering collaborative values over competition,
- Providing support, constructive criticism and positive affirmations to build employee morale, etc
Burnout can still occur. Burnout is sneaky and a lot of times employees might find themselves in it.
Some reasons for Burnout to occur can be -
- There is a big project underway,
- They are under immense pressure,
- Impostor syndrome is on the rise,
- There is miscommunication occurring, especially at the start and the end of the project, etc.
So if your employee is telling you they’re burnt out, remember it’s not the end of the world.
Here are 6 steps to follow when your employees are Burnt Out
1. Give Gratitude
(not a vacation) to them for sharing this with you and letting them know that they hear you.
2. Support Them
Take this time to support them by asking THEM what they need to move through this difficult time and help them through.
3. Provide them with resources
Provide them with all they need and once they are back in action of their own accord, do this!
4. Invite them to a safe space
Invite them inside a safe environment to share what led them to burnout. Ask for their support in figuring out what you can do to prevent this from happening in the future!
5. Create Focus Groups
Create groups within your company to understand if these stress factors are affecting them as well!
6. Create and Manage Systems
Create and place systems in place to prevent burnout from occurring by managing stress better… by managing time and resources better!
If you are someone who already has a great work culture, know that these steps help you in building and maintaining what you’ve created!
If you don’t have a good work culture and you are noticing a lot of complaints, it’s not too late to start now! Understandably, it’s always better to create and prioritize a healthy work culture right off the bat… but it’s better to start now than to wait before you hit rock bottom!
Hitting rock bottom aka Burnout can look like this -
- High Employee Turnover,
- Retention and/or Recruitment costs,
- Low Employee Morale,
- Low Efficiency,
- Losing your best Employees to Burnout or to your competition.
Don’t wait for these things to occur. Take this as a sign to do the above-mentioned steps for your employees without them reaching a place of Burnout!
