I know some of you are rolling your eyes thinking that Madhurima no longer has good questions and topics to speak on!

Look at her scrambling at straws to find new factors of stress.

But honestly, hear me out. This is a real thing! Read on to find out more about what my crazy woo-woo mind thinks about this question!

Personally, I feel like meditation becomes stressful when we try to expect too much from the activity.

We are all aware that meditation is often recommended to calm our nervous system and help us relax, but the activity in and of itself is a bit arbitrary and difficult to understand, especially for a beginner. It doesn’t help that there are a lot of myths surrounding meditation such as -

  • You have to sit still in one place for a long period of time which is honestly ridiculous! Some suggest sitting still for over 20 minutes. Have you seen our generation? We can’t sit still for a minute, much less 20!
  • You have to clear your mind and not have any distracting thoughts, so you focus on pushing those thoughts away, unsuccessfully.
  • There is only one right way to meditate, etc.

These myths tend to add a lot of stress to an individual who is trying meditation for the first time.

According to me, meditation is an activity that helps you with having more awareness of yourself. I tend to meditate -

  • While I am doing my daily chores or dancing — something that helps me get in touch with my body,
  • Listen to my thoughts instead of pushing them away, it’s a great way to build a better relationship with ourselves,
  • For around 5 minutes, 10 in very serious scenarios. Plus it’s better to meditate in breaks throughout the day (if you wish to), rather than meditate for long durations in one go!

Here’s my suggestion. Don’t try to restrict yourself and just experience meditation as a tool to grow more aware of your body. Have fun and take it one step at a time!

And be ready to experience different types and forms of meditation! Finding your favourite type or types of meditation is like a game of trial and error. You keep searching till you find the right one/ones!

So go out there, party, and get aware! Let’s go!!
