Join us in making this July

#ConsciousAdMonth

Let’s make July Conscious Ad Month. We’re asking every brand and every agency to take at least an hour this month to sit down and say ‘What are we doing already to tackle hate speech, ad fraud & fake news? What more can we do? How can we instead fund journalism, quality content and diversity?’. If you work on the publisher/platform side then ask yourself how you can make this easier for advertisers, to guarantee safety in your environments, and how we can work together as an industry to improve measures of quality & attention, and bring them into our trading.

It’s great to see advertisers taking a public stand with their media investments, though this is bigger than Facebook. It is the whole system.

Focusing on one platform may make incremental change on that platform.

Your media is more than a mechanism to show words and pictures to as many eyeballs as possible. It is an investment in the open and free internet. You can choose to invest in great journalism, diverse voices and incredible content or you can choose to turn a blind eye to funding hate speech online, or in the press or on TV.

Now that the conversations have started let’s not lose the opportunity to continue them. Join us in making July Conscious Ad Month and starting a broader change across the industry. We recognise the many actions advertisers, agencies and the wider ecosystem have made in this space, but we see opportunities for us all to do more. The 6 CAN manifestos provide clear recommendations for those wanting to go deeper.

Auditing your entire media plan against the Conscious Advertising Network’s Hate Speech manifesto is a good place to start. It is free to use and implement and was written with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations.
