“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

It can be hard to find complete harmony with happiness when people have tough life experiences that prevent them from seeing how joyful life is. The very meaning of their existence seems to be overlooked in a fog of despair. They tend to be nomadic in their approach to life. Moving from one thing to another, hoping to find joy.

We don’t expect to be satisfied all the time. In Shakesperean language, people tend to be fickle-minded. They change their opinions quite frequently, not able to concentrate on one single thing. Yes, it is the nitty-gritty of life that puts the never-ending thirst for wealth, strength, and lust above happiness.

Is Happiness Attainable?

Well, the answer is an affirmative YES. The answer lies in analyzing the following questions:

  1. What is our definition of Happiness?
  2. What makes us Happy?
  3. Is Happiness Measurable?
  4. Can we feel Happiness?
  5. Do we make others happy?

These questions are how we need to evaluate our lives. We need to understand and measure the way in which we had been treating the term happiness.

The Definition of Happiness

Can happiness be ever defined? Many people have given definitions of the term happiness. Let us forget all those descriptions for the time being. Think about the most beautiful moment in your life. Perhaps it’s a wedding day, a graduation day, or the day you’ve made your family proud. Think about the events and emotions of that day. If we can recall these memories with a smile on our face and a sense of satisfaction, we’ve possibly got the definition right.

People are always in search of happiness. We tend to forget the basic rule for joy. I say it’s to search within ourselves. An intensive and exhaustive search needs to happen within us. To cherish the best moments in our lives. To relive the best memories, to find happiness, and propagate it to society.

Factors which makes us happy

There are many factors that directly or indirectly influence our happiness. The intensive and exhaustive search that we’ve performed might very well reveal our inner self. But this is not enough to keep us motivated to be happy all the time. How can we find these elements and get in tune with them? The answer lies within the inner self. We already know these fundamentals. “Love” is that magical factor which makes us happy, love is the metric for happiness”

As we start loving people around us, as we start loving Nature, as we start appreciating the smallest acts of kindness, we become more humane. The more humane we become, the more we reach nearer to a perfect happiness index.

The Happiness Index- Is it Measurable?

According to Wikipedia, Finland is the country with the highest happiness index. The index is measured by economic, and psychological surveys. Is happiness truly measurable? Is it possible to get this metric wrong? I believe the happiness metric is the resemblance of our own life. The way in which we approach our lives is very important. The more positive and self-balanced we are, we tend to feel happier. It is not the riches and the glory that matters to the inner mind. It is undoubtedly the richness in finding happiness that matters the most. Thus measuring happiness is restricted to our own Self.

The feeling of Happiness

Accepting ourselves as we are, is the best feeling to have when we are in the pursuit of happiness. We tend to ignore the silly matters of life and start focussing on larger goals. We begin to pursue our passion when we truly understand the importance of happiness. Look at the gleam in the eyes of a child, the happiness exhibited by the tiniest of us all- there is no greater definition of happiness than this powerful emotion.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”- Mathew 19:14

When we’re chasing the same degree of happiness even in our old age, we’ve realized what’s truly important through our life experiences.

Make Others Happy

Happiness is about giving meaning to those around us. To make another person happy is truly fulfilling. We may wonder how this is possible. This is the greatest test of time that we face in our lives.

Can we make others happy? The answer lies within our own soul. Our inner self can be reflected in each and every person we meet through our life story. By making others happy, we tend to receive a part of their happiness. This is the best way in which we can spread happiness around the world. We should always believe that a happy face, a smiling face, a loving soul can change the world for the better. When we make people happy, we make them feel special. This mantra should never be forgotten. It is far too easy to spread hatred and negativity with our thoughts and deeds. We need to be mindful and make an effort to be the light the world needs.

To spread the message of happiness we need an open heart, a heart that pumps day in and day out, liters of happiness. Let that be our secret mantra.

Life laughs at you when you are unhappy; Life smiles at you when you are happy; But life salutes you when you make others happy- Charlie Chaplin
