In this article, I’m going to show how to make some Korean tteokbokki! Tteokbokki is one of my favorite Korean dishes of all time, and I’m so excited to share this recipe with you.

This popular street food consists of chewy and springy rice cakes that’s saturated in a bath of hot and sweet red pepper sauce. It’s a dish that’s absolutely to die for. Best of all, it’s super tasty, easy to make, and great to share for up to 3 to 4 people.

There’s a lot of variations and methods when making tteokbokki. Personally, I like to add hard-boiled eggs, lots of green onions, fish cakes, and plenty of rice cakes. I also like to do a 2:1 ratio between sweet and spicy for my tteotkbokki recipe. I think this ratio is perfect for those who can’t handle spicy all that well but still like a kick of it.

In lieu of msg and sugar which are common ingredients for tteokbokki, I also used beef broth and honey for my recipe. Feel free to switch to whatever ingredient you prefer best.

With that said, let me show you the most painless way to make some delicious tteokbokki right at home!

Tteokbokki Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp of green onion
  • 4 sheets of fish cakes
  • 4 cups of wheat rice cakes (original rice cakes)
  • 2~3 Hard-boiled eggs

Tteokbokki Sauce Ingredients

  • 1L of water
  • 1/2 cup of red pepper flakes
  • 1/3 cup of honey or brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of chili paste (Korean Gochujang)
  • 1/3 cup of dark soy sauce
  • 1 tsp. of beef stock

Instructions

1. Rinse the rice cakes in water.

2. In a pot, add water, red pepper flakes, honey, chili paste, dark soy sauce, and beef stock. Cook on medium-high and mix the ingredients together.

3. Once the sauce begins to bubble, add the rice cakes and green onion. Bring the flame to a medium-low and stir. *Make sure to stir continuously; otherwise, the ingredients on the bottom of the pot will burn.*

4. Add the fish cakes and hard-boiled eggs last and continue to stir until the sauce becomes runny. Do a quick taste check and adjust with the following ingredients: 1 tbsp of gochujang to increase the spice level; 1/2 tbsp of honey to increase the sweetness; or 1 tsp of beef stock for a more savory taste. This is completely up to you.

5. Transfer the tteokbokki to a dish of your choice. Sprinkle with some sesame seeds or perilla leaves on top. Enjoy!

6. Pro tip: Cut up some fish cakes into rectangular shapes and cook them in an air fryer at 175 degrees Celcius (350 degrees) for 8 minutes. The end result is a crunchy and crispy snack that you can enjoy with your tteokbokki. It’s super delicious, and I highly recommend making it if you have an air fryer at home.
