50 Cent’s The Kanan Tape

Overall 5.7

Working with artists in Harlem,

I know all too well the importance of relevancy. In the midst of holding on to legacy, and staying current to a fast moving, constantly changing music industry. 50 Cents “The Kanan Tape” delivers poorly on both ends. Paying tribute to his villanous character Kanan in the new Starz series “Power”. “The Kanan Tape” is composed of 7 tracks each sounding similar to the other. In his effort to provide complexity, the tape only provides the same 50 Cent we are customed to. However, I can’t say I don’t see the effort from 50 to stay relevant. Assembling up and coming producers such as “London on the Track” and “BandPlay” its no question 50 still keeps his ear to the music. From my perspective, its rare you find artists that can consistantly stand the test of time and switch there music to fit whats trending. Listening to “The Kanan Tape” you can hear the struggle of a artist established in the early 2000s fighting for his relevance in the new era. Lyrically, 50 Cent delivers the usually drug & extortion wordplay we heard over the past decade. Yet of course, don’t expect Curtis Jackson to deliver anything more than what he is tradionally known for.
