When is it time to get an entertainment attorney, where can you find the right person and how should you approach one?

Any contract or negotiation that will have a large impact on your career, affect your business and tie up any of your intellectual property rights for a long time should trigger an internal nudge to reach out to an entertainment attorney.

Most artists, producers, and creatives are probably a bit too early or a bit too late in regards to obtaining an entertainment attorney. There is no exact science into when you actually need one but there are certainly more obvious times that call for an entertainment attorney. If you are an artist and any significant agreement comes into the fray, you should consult with an entertainment attorney before signing. A significant agreement could be a management agreement, production agreement, distribution agreement and obviously bigger contracts like record label agreements. If you are a producer and have just landed your first big placement and you get the producer agreement, it’s time to consult with an entertainment attorney.
