You Will Fail

The voice of reason from a reluctant optimist

The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry. ~ Ernest Hemingway

You will have a lover humiliate you, leave you. Your company will tank. You will be demoted, fired or laid off. You will lose the respect of your peers. You will disappoint your heroes. The question is, how will you respond?

Will you look for the nearest train to jump in front of? Will you hit the bottle and swallow lethal pills? Or will you grab this bull by the tail and face reality?

Reality is, if you’re not swinging for the fences you’re not trying hard enough.

Failure reminds us we need to try harder, be smarter, find a different approach.

Not selling your art? Make better art. Learn how to sell more effectively. Be more compelling. Find a better audience. What do they want? Give it to them!

We’re not here to live a colorless, flavorless, or mediocre life. To enjoy the fragrance of a rose we may feel the prick of a thorn. To embrace the love of our life we may first experience the pain of failed relationships.

Failure also reminds us we’re human. Our response to failure makes us or breaks us. Don’t stay broken. Fight the good fight. Don’t wish it were easier, wish you were better. Be a better person. Contribute more. Discover ways to add more value at work, at home, in your community, in your conversations. Challenge yourself by asking better questions like “How may I serve?” Instead of, “What’s in it for me?”

Amazing things begin to happen when we practice this philosophy. Doors open we never even noticed. When we work from this worldview the universe conspires to nudge us forward, even when we’re failing.

Failure reminds us we at least tried. History books are filled with biographies of successful failures.

A Better Day

Lover kicked you to the curb? Find a better lover, they’re out there waiting for you. Company tanked? Start a new company — or go work for a great organization, they’re out there and there’s a need for good talent. Lost the respect of your peers? Earn your respect back. Don’t give up or give in. Disappointed your heroes? Give more, be more, deliver more. If they don’t respond favorably, find new heroes. They’re out there too.

Here’s to our many failures yet to come and the wake of fun to follow. To a better day!
