Interview with Nils + Dorien from Belgium

Explore- Your customers are smarter than you

This week our creative founder BAX team is getting more involved with the conversation with people. We love our customers. They have different experiences and perspectives of their live. Before we started our interview, we defined our objective is travel experience with time and budget management. Our hypothesis were that accidental problems will break travel plans, people have different time management habits while traveling, and people are less healthy and active when traveling. The travel process is different than your normal life, and keep balance is the key. But, our interviewees thought differently…

How we did it?

We talked with 6 people this week and 4 people last week. We found our friends who had traveled recently and in the past, as well as foreign airbnb guests who were currently traveling.

Affinity mapping is a good way to find theme and pattern from your interview, which help us to identify our topic map.

Empathy map is a good way to find our customers and understand who we are designing for. At this point, we explored two extremes type of customers- Travelers(Backpackers) and tourists. We made two different maps, and use red dots to represent some overlapping parts:

You can find my previous blog to see more detail findings.

Unplanned travel with friends or locals

People are more spontaneous when they travel. One of our vegetarian yoga teacher said she would go to grocery store to get healthy breakfast, but getting drunk and have fun with friends during night. They love the moment of getting surprised, and talking life easier when they travel.

“Travel makes my life different, new habits, unplanned schedule. That is the most fun part of traveling.”

Most of our participants said that traveling encourages them to go outside their comfort zone, try new things, and talk to strangers. When we talked with a couple from Belgium, totally didn’t know each other before. They run our of their money for traveling, and lived in our friend Chris’s bus at that night. We ended up with a 1.5 hours great conversation.

“Traveling with other people brings you closer together.”

Next time

Our creative founder BAX team becomes more organized than last week. We did good job on communication both in-person and over distance. Our two teammates are very thoughtful. The next step is to narrow down our target customers to a specific group of people. We will focus on their jobs, pains and gains. Plus, we will do more secondary research to see how exist market works and which one have more potential to bring values!
