Have we been making something that’s relevant?
It is very easy to stay in our own head and be excited by simply just imagining all possible ways things will go right.
Our team decided that we will first start by pushing out a landing page to refine our language and understand whether there’re interests in what we are working on. We all agreed that we should finish and push out the landing page on Friday night, or Saturday morning the latest, but that did not happen.
Yes the landing page was finished by Friday evening, but when we showed it to friends or classmates who weren’t previously aware of our project, they couldn’t understand what we were doing.
“I can read the text, you should change the back ground.”
“So what is this?”
“What am I signing up for again?
As shown on the left, the description on the landing was vague and confusing. The background is distracting.
It was extremely helpful to just put it in front of others and hear their raw thoughts.
With those feedback and comments, we spent the next 36+ hours debating, testing, refining our thoughts. No matter what we wrote, it just didn’t feel right.
Eventually, we were able to create a friendly description that helped us to gain some traction toward the landing page.
But it was not just the page that we had to make…
How do we share it on Instagram and Facebook? Do we just link it? Do we write a caption for the post? When we link the url, what goes onto the thumbnail image?
We ended up creating a looping video for posting on Instagram and Facebook. Since there are so many visual competition on social media, ensuring that our content can be understood quickly was important.
We also added a thumbnail image to the image to give a preview of the landing page.
Creating a landing page was a very effective way of refining our language and thinking of this “thing” we are building. Having a one-liner and paragraph description where all teammates can point to and say “this is what we are making and testing” was surprisingly hard and rewarding.
Since the landing page is a soft signal for market validation, we are currently testing our with other approaches to gain a stronger signal of market interest.
