Week 5: Research Prep and Moving Forward

Last week we got stuck. It was confusing and not a nice place to be in.

So we did what Christina suggested and mapped out a timeline of jobs that need to get done throughout an Earthquake — Awareness, Prep, Upkeep, Survival, Recovery — and listing existing products and services that correspond to each job.

We found that there aren’t many products or services after an earthquake hits other than the government, SFFD, NERT, Red Cross, and other big emergency responding groups.

We also looked back at our Customer Jobs/Pains/Gains and realized that we weren’t really addressing the community aspect that people were interested in.

We came up with storyboards over the weekend and ideated further, and we now have a new idea that we were able to test at Whole Foods on Sunday.

Our new service brings neighbors together to prepare. We found that SF72 is a great resource but while it gives you suggestions and recommendations, it doesn’t actually bring you to take action. You can learn a lot and be like, ok cool and that’s it. We found this behaviour throughout emergency prep in general: people hear/read about what’s going to happen or what you should do, but they don’t actually do anything. This is the area we’re trying to work in, where we can provide tools that people will act upon and have them ready when an actual earthquake hits.

Quite a few of the people we talked to at Whole Foods were already involved in their community and neighborhood and quite prepared for emergencies(on a scale of 1–6, they rated themselves a 4.) On the other hand, there were also people who did not know their neighbors at all, were not prepared, but were interested in interacting with their neighbors and preparing together. We’re hoping to connect these people together.

Next steps: I definitely want to research on why people in Haiti are urging us not to donate to the Red Cross. I wonder if something like this would happen if an emergency hit SF?
