Mixed Government Worker Reactions to Congressional Border Security Deal
Many Are Hopeful for a Veto
Congressional negotiators have agreed to a border security bill that would fund the government through September. The bill does not contain any of the $5.7B of concrete wall funding Trump demanding during the record-setting December 2018 government shutdown but does contain $1.375B for the construction of “bollard fencing”, effectively the steel slats the President has been settled on.
Reactions to the news of the funding measure range from positive to confused to outright anger among queer government workers, as evidenced by numerous tweets on gay twitter.
“Shutdowns give me a sense of love and worth because people were just giving me stuff. Now I have to go back to gauging my friendships the old fashioned way — through likes on Insta. GAH!” — Alex Tornbone · Supreme Court Picture Hanger
“I am so relieved to avoid another shutdown so that I can afford to keep my rollerblades maintained. Whew!” — Greta VanHonricksen · White House Roofer
“I come across as shy but I really enjoy being the center of attention. Let’s hope the President vetoes this because I could really use another self-esteem boost right now.” — Alexandria Guillermo · Asst. Park Ranger
“Is a bollard like a…um, like a really pretty fence?” — James Greenlawn · National Atomic Testing Museum Potted Plants Tender
“This is just awful. How many ICE cages could we build with all that money? What are we going to do, just allow refugee children to wander around the countryside aimlessly? That doesn’t seem safe.” — Fortune Willowseed · Congressional Shaman
