The Tragic Life and Death of Amy Winehouse

Amy Jade Winehouse always loved music, and she knew her destiny was to sing. At fourteen, she bought a guitar and taught herself to play. There was no stopping her. Amy's voice was soulful, unique, and powerful, but her personal life was in shambles. Amy is in the 27 club with Kurt Cobain, Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison, who all died at age 27.

On September 14, 1983, she was born to Janis and Mitchell Winehouse in Southgate, London, England. Amy and her older brother, Alex was raised Jewish and brought up in a modest home. Her mother was a pharmacist, and her father a taxi driver. They divorced when she was 10. Her mother, Sylvia, raised her. When her father left her mother for another woman, Amy was so distraught it's alleged she tried to commit suicide by taking large dosages of medication.

At 12, she was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theater School but was expelled for wearing a nose ring and "Not applying herself." At sixteen, she was singing in a jazz band. At 20, she dropped her first album Frank, which did modestly well.

In October 2006, her second album, Back to Black, launched her into superstardom. It reached number 7 in the U.S. and England and won 5 Grammy awards. Time magazine named "rehab." the best song of 2007. She mixed R&B, Reggae, Jazz…
