Norma Jeane Mortenson, better known as Marilyn Monroe, was born in Los Angeles, California, on June 1, 1926. Her mother, Gladys Baker, was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and Paranoid Schizophrenia. She never met her father.

Norma Jeane was raised in foster care at the Los Angeles Orphan Home Society. It was while she lived there that she dreamed of being a big movie star. Her wish came true, but at a considerable price. Her life was full of tragedy.

Childhood and Fame

Throughout her childhood, she was sexually abused. At sixteen, desperate to find a home and feeling like she did’t belong, she married James Dougherty. Four years later, they divorced.

She became famous as a pin-up model and changed her name to Marilyn Monroe— an icon was born. But, the pressures of fame proved too much for her. She started taking prescription drugs and she liked to drink. She enjoyed drinking champagne for breakfast.

Her greatest fear in life was she would lose her mind like her mother.

In the fifties, she became the biggest star in the world and a major sex symbol. Her movies made millions. She died at the peak of her career.
