New Zealand still remembers June 22, 1954, when two young girls, Pauline Parker and her friend, Juliet Hulme, tried to get away with the murder of Pauline’s mother, Honorah. Their obsession with each other and the fantasy world they shared had led them to believe they would soon be separated by their parents and Honorah was an obstacle in the way of a wonderful Hollywood future together.

It’s been 50 years since this sensational crime was committed, but the case is still famous today in the city of Christchurch. Pauline Parker was 16 years old when she murdered her mother with the help of her best friend, 15-year-old Juliet Hulme. Juliet’s family was leaving the country and Pauline was worried that her mother would not let her go, so they took matters into their own hands.

The teens met when Juliet first moved to New Zealand. She had suffered over the years with poor health ever since she had contracted tuberculosis when she was a young child. Her family relocated to New Zealand under the advice of her doctors, believing the warmer weather would help her condition. Pauline had been diagnosed with a bone infection known as osteomyelitis.
