Going away to graduate school is usually a smart decision. It’s a decision that not only leads to higher education, but often better career opportunities and financial gain. Unfortunately, not everyone gets the chance to finish their education.
Betsy Aardsma
Betsy Aardsma was a 22-year-old graduate student at Pennsylvania State University, more endearingly known as Penn State by its students and alumni. Betsy was a long way from her hometown of Holland, Michigan and was still getting to know her way around Penn State as a first-year graduate student.
Betsy Aardsma had been in Michigan visiting family over the Thanksgiving holiday when she decided to head back to school a bit early. Betsy had planned on visiting the campus’ library and conducting research for an upcoming assignment.
Friday, November 28, 1969
On the Friday after Thanksgiving Betsy Aardsma was back on the campus of Penn State. Much of the campus was fairly empty given that it was a holiday weekend, although Betsy’s roommate was still in town.
Betsy and her roommate decided to go to the Pattee Library on Penn State’s campus to get some work done. They arrived at 4 p.m. Upon their arrival, they parted ways. Betsy headed up to the second level of the library on…
