Strange Bacterial Infection Helps to Catch a Killer

In 1994, 67-year-old Rhoda Nathan took a trip to Cincinnati Ohio for a Bar Mitzvah. She checked into a hotel with her friends Elaine and Joe who were a couple. While at the hotel, Elaine and Joe decided to go down early for breakfast giving Rhoda some privacy.

Only an hour later, Joe and Elaine came back to Rhoda who was on the floor barely alive. Rhoda had been brutally beaten and not long after they called 911, Rhoda was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The clear motive was a robbery and with the help of a knowledgeable doctor, and some dental bacteria called eikenella corrodens, the case was solved.

The Scene of the Crime

Back in the room, Elaine realized that she had $500 missing from her purse and suddenly, she also realized that when they found Rhoda in their room, she was not wearing her necklace. Rhoda would always wear a diamond necklace that was custom-made for her by her husband. She never took it off, not even to shower or sleep.

Bruising over Rhoda's body indicated she had been beaten with 2 separate objects as well as someone's fists. The autopsy quickly confirmed that her death was a homicide. At the scene…
