During the summer of 2013 in Texas, the Boyles family was having a fun night in their home. It was a Saturday night and their daughter Shelby was on a break from nursing school. After enjoying dinner and a night of board games, Shelby and her parents Eric and Holly decided to watch a movie. During the movie, they heard a commotion outdoors and they went outside to check it out.

At around the same time, another family was hosting a graduation party for a friend. Pastor Brian Jennings was in attendance and after the party came to an end, he offered 2 boys a ride home before making a pitstop at the church to drop off some chairs.

The town was alive that Saturday night because not far away, 16-year-old Ethan Couch was having a house party for him and his friends. There was underage drinking involved as well as the use of drugs such as Xanax and Valium. The teenagers had managed to steal some beer and liquor from Walmart and were illegally drinking at Ethan’s house.
