Luka Rocco Magnotta was born on July 24th, 1982 in Scarborough, Ontario in Canada. Magnotta was born with his parents’ given name Eric Clinton Kirk Newman. He was born to his mother Anna Yourkin and father Donald Newman. Luka was the oldest of three children.
Luka Magnotta did not have an easy childhood. His mother had the tendency to lock her children out of the house for long periods. She reportedly had a serious problem with cleanliness where she would clean things that were not meant to be cleaned. In one incident she put Luka’s pet rabbit out in the cold where it froze to death.
Luka was bullied at school in addition to his home life being extremely difficult.
Luka’s father was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1994 and shortly after this diagnosis, Luka’s mother filed for divorce which is when Luka went to live with his grandmother, Phyllis. Living with either of his parents wasn’t an option for him. He didn’t have a good relationship with either of them.
However, after Luka moved in with his grandma his grandparents got divorced. All of this led Luka to have a toxic perception of relationships.
In 2003, Luka started acting in gay pornographic films. He also worked as a stripper and escort. He was featured as a pinup model in the 2005 issue of the Toronto-based magazine “Fab.” In 2005 Magnotta was also convicted of his first crime. He was convicted of impersonation and three counts of fraud against Sears Canada, The Brick, and the 2001 Audio video store. He impersonated a woman to apply for a credit card and spent over $10,000 on the credit card at the listed stores. He received a 9-month conditional sentence along with 12 months of probation.
Luka was always looking for attention because growing up he did not get any. In 2004 he was 22 years old and he befriended a woman online through one of his many social media accounts. The woman was 22 years old as well but she had several mental disabilities which brought her mental maturity to that of an 8-year-old.
