Movies to watch this fall

Fall is finally here! The weather is cold and perfect for staying indoors, so what better way to spend it than sharing some snacks with family and friends and watching some movies?

From cult classics we grew up with, to drama-filled romances, terrifying horror movies, comedies that make us laugh until we cry and even some fun movies for the entire family. Here are eight recommendations to enjoy this fall:

1. Dead Poets Society (1989)

Genre: Cult Classic/Comedy/Drama

Rating: PG

Synopsis: “A new English teacher, John Keating is introduced to an all-boys preparatory school that is known for its ancient traditions and high standards. He uses unorthodox methods to reach out to his students, who face enormous pressures from their parents and the school. With Keating’s help, students Neil Perry, Todd Anderson and others learn to break out of their shells, pursue their dreams and seize the day.”

2. The Princess Bride (1987)

Genre: Cult Classic/Fantasy/Romance/Comedy

Rating: PG

Synopsis: “A fairy tale adventure about a beautiful young woman and her one true love. He must find her after a long separation and save her. They must battle the evils of the mythical kingdom of Florin to be reunited with each other. Based on the William Goldman novel “The Princess Bride” which earned its own loyal audience.”

3. Runaway Bride (1999)

Genre: Romance/Comedy/Road

Rating: PG

Synopsis: “Having already left three grooms at the altar, Maggie Carpenter is branded ‘the runaway bride’ by jaded city journalist Ike Graham. But, after his facts are called into question, Ike races to Maggie’s hometown to save his reputation and report on her upcoming fourth trip down the aisle — during which he’s convinced she’ll run again. Though he’s there on a muckraking mission, Ike can’t help but fall for this breathtaking heartbreaker.”

4. Mama (2013)

Genre: Horror/Thriller

Rating: PG-13

Synopsis: “On the day that their parents die, sisters Lilly and Victoria vanish in the woods, prompting a frantic search by their Uncle Lucas and his girlfriend, Annabel. Five years later, miraculously, the girls are found alive in a decaying cabin, and Lucas and Annabel welcome them into their home. But as Annabel tries to reintroduce the children to a normal life, she finds that someone — or something — still wants to tuck them in at night.”

5. The Sixth Sense (1999)

Genre: Thriller/Horror

Rating: PG-13

Synopsis: “Young Cole Sear is haunted by a dark secret: he is visited by ghosts. Cole is frightened by visitations from those with unresolved problems who appear from the shadows. He is too afraid to tell anyone about his anguish, except child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe. As Dr. Crowe tries to uncover the truth about Cole’s supernatural abilities, the consequences for client and therapist are a jolt that awakens them both to something unexplainable.”

6. The Goonies (1985)

Genre: Comedy/ Adventure/ Family

Synopsis: “Old-fashioned yarn about a band of adventurous kids who take on the might of a property developing company which plans to destroy their home to build a country club. When the children discover an old pirate map in the attic, they follow it into an underground cavern in search of lost treasure but come up against plenty of dangerous obstacles along the way.”

7. Coco (2017)

Genre: Family/Comedy

Rating: PG

Synopsis: “Despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead. After meeting a charming trickster named Héctor, the two new friends embark on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.”

8. Fantastic Mr.Fox (2009)

Genre: Family/Comedy

Synopsis: “After 12 years of bucolic bliss, Mr. Fox breaks a promise to his wife and raids the farms of their human neighbors, Boggis, Bunce and Bean. Giving in to his animal instincts endangers not only his marriage but also the lives of his family and their animal friends. When the farmers force Mr. Fox and company deep underground, he has to resort to his natural craftiness to rise above the opposition.”
