Junior Sofia Rodriguez

Best Buddies is a brand-new on-campus inclusion group and the first of its kind in AISD, curated by junior Sofia Rodriguez and Crockett counselor Amy Rogers. It’s a peer mentoring program for the students in life skills or any student that needs a little extra help, where a student is paired with a life skills student and meets on a weekly basis for either lunch, school periods, or off-campus events.

Freshman Jackson Edwards

Jackson Edwards is the lead singer of the indie-rock band The Oxymorons. The band is composed of four other students from all over AISD, have played in several areas around Austin, and are expecting an SXSW show this year.

Junior Elijah Flores

Elijah Flores is the first recipient of the Javier Nino Memorial scholarship for classical guitar. The award includes private instruction by an AGG faculty member, paid solo performance opportunities, and a brand new guitar. Flores had to submit a personal statement that addressed his relationship with music, his future goals, and dreams.

Senior Aspen Walker

Aspen Walker is the first senior to be accepted into college this year. Walker was accepted into Abilene Christian University and Texas State University. “I feel really excited; I feel good that my hard work over the past four years paid off.”

Freshman Quinn Mayor

Quinn Mayor enjoys playing basketball despite all of the challenges she has faced being disabled. Mayor has wanted to play sports, but being in a wheelchair made it hard to participate. She found ATX Abilities, an organization that gives people with disabilities the chance to participate in sports teams and now plays for the Austin Rec’ers, a basketball team for youth in wheelchairs. “Every time I think of giving up, I remember my first tournament when I met a Paralympian, and she showed me her gold medal from Rio 2016.”
