The Unsurprising Disappointment

A poem that is here because it didn’t wait for anything else

A cartoon of a guy watching a sapling grow in a narrow lane. There is a picket fence disappearing into the distance on either side of the grassy lane. A blue bird is kibbitzing. The dude is wearing a light blue t-shirt and navy shorts and very stylish white ankle socks. A low sun radiates in the background, but whether it is sunrise or sunset is more or less unimportant to the story. Art by Doodleslice 2024.
Tree Watching, by Doodleslice 2024

Yup
The same reasons
When you watch someone
Plant a tree
In their narrow lane
And wait for it to grow
So they can chop it down
Because it stands in the way
Of the journey
They promise to take
Just as soon as they clear
The stump
But that hole
Needs to be filled
So they build a house
With no doors
And wonder
Why they can
Never
Rest
Inside
Or begin the trip
They’ve spent their whole life packing
When all they needed
Was to leave
Empty pockets
Have plenty of room
For mistakes
