LeBron James & Russell Westbrook Should Be the USA’s 3-on-3 Team

Two real MVPs

Let me preface this by saying I’m sure that this is 100% impossible, but this would also make the Summer Olympics new event, 3 on 3 basketball, 100,000% more entertaining than it already will be.

In the 2020 Summer Olympics, taking place in Tokyo, the IOC finally made the decision to give the USA even more gold medals, adding 3 on 3 basketball. The rules include a 12-second shot clock, the 10-minute game clock, and baskets being worth 1 & 2. Each “team” will be allowed 4 players, but I am fully confident that the US only needs two.

Russell Westbrook III is a PG standing at 6'3" and 200 lbs. and is the NBA’s most recent MVP winner. Mr. Westbrook averaged a triple double for the 2016–17 season, in case you have been living under a rock for the past year. Westbrook is known for his unbelievable athleticism as well as a “balls to the wall” mentality.

LeBron Raymone James is an American professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers. James stands at 6'9", 250 lbs and is quite possibly the most talented basketball player to ever live. LeBron’s basketball resumé includes 3 NBA titles, 3 NBA finals MVPs, 4 regular season MVPs, 13 all star selections, 11 1st team All-NBA selections, 5 1st team All-Defense selections, and 2 olympic team gold medals.

The Spanish Whites

These two specimens without a doubt could cover the half-court that 3 on 3 will be played on and hang with the less good, less athletic players that the other countries will trot out for this event. Spain, the second ranked country in FIBA’s most recent rankings & the bronze medal winners in the 2016 olympics, would most likely have a team of Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, Rudy Fernandez, and Sergio Rodriguez…yuck. The 2016 silver medalist team, Serbia, would include Nikola Jokic, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Milos Teodosic, and Stefan Markovic. A slightly more intriguing team, sure but still not as good as the American 2. A dark horse country for this event would be the Dominican Republic who would include Al Horford, Karl-Anthony Towns, and 2 other people who play basketball that were born in the DR. This team could give Bron and Russell fits, but I still see them winning a close 5 point game.

The Serbian Whites

I say all of that to say this, I hope that the USA basketball powers that be, read this and try to find a way to create even more buzz around this new event. Sure, three players could create a double team on the player holding the basketball at any given time, but I am extremely confident in the ability of James or Westbrook to have the athleticism and court vision to be able to get free & get buckets.
