What Is Biotechnology?

You may hear about Biotechnology. Biotechnology is not a single thing if you think that. It’s a whole new sector. I am saying this “new” because it is not as old as other sectors. Biotechnology is the broad area of biology involving living systems and organisms to develop or make products, or “any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use”

At its simplest, biotechnology is technology based on biology — biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve humans lives and the health of the planet. People have used the biological processes of microorganisms for more than 6,000 years to make useful food products, such as bread and cheese, and to preserve dairy products.

Modern biotechnology provides breakthrough products and technologies to combat debilitating and rare diseases, reduce our environmental footprint, feed the hungry, use less and cleaner energy, and have safer, cleaner, and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes.
