What Is Proper Fanservice?

Fanservice is the spice that makes an anime tasty. Why I am writing about fanservice all of a sudden? Well, I am a die-hard fan of well-put fanservice. But, now, almost all anime has fanservice to an extent. I don’t mind it but what I object about is the quality of this fanservice. Almost no anime could use the scenes, dialogues correctly. From this frustration, I am writing about what do I mean with “Proper Fanservice”. I will try to explain what is the difference between the use of unnecessary fanservice and good fanservice here.

What is Fanservice?

In general, fan service refers to scenes designed to excite or titillate the viewer. This can include scantily-clad outfits, cleavage shots, panty shots, nude scenes (shower scenes especially), etc. Some broader definitions also include things like cool mecha, big explosions, battle scenes, etc. Basically, if it has little plot-redeeming value, but makes the viewer sit up and take notice, it’s probably fan service in one form or another.

Anime teems with fan service (fanservice, or service cut), complementary content that aims to give fans exactly what they want. Breasts! Big robots! Panties! fan service has become such a part of anime that it defines genres. For example, comedy anime often features the antics of perverted male spying up lady’s skirts or a prudish guy surrounded by girls lacking qualms about showing off their assets. Think Master Roshi from the Dragon Ball series and just about every male protagonist in the harem genre. Fan service most often…
