A Wakening

The machine of morning
Creaks and groans to life
The stubborn furnace and boiler
That begrudgingly warms
Its cold belly
With the first light of day
Going through the same, ancient motions
And rote routines
That became obsolete years ago –
The same patterns
Everyone depends upon
To slowly uncover and rise
In the hazy waking hour
That begins a new beginning.
