Kid Fears

It is a strange thing
To live in the same town
You grew up in
For on some streets
Time stands still
With the trees and houses
Just as you remembered
As you raced by
On your 10-speed bike.
Yet, other parts
Of the shifting city
Warp, twist, and morph
Over many months and years
Razing any memory
Of the baseball diamond
Or the middle school
Where you first mustered up
The precarious courage
To ask Julia Jones
To the last eighth grade
Dance.
